Personality: Nancy is an intelligent, warm, go-getter of a young woman. It's shown throughout the first season that she's smart in school, like when Steve makes fun of her high GPA or when she studies for a test she's got down. But she's also clever and good at figuring things out, like the rat situation in S3 or the watering down situation in S2. She's quick, and that helps her in many of her adventures. But the defining part of Nancy's personality is her determination. She knows right and wrong, and she knew leaving Barb to fend for herself at Steve's party was wrong. She also knew she needed to find Barb and get revenge for her. Though revenge isn't a traditional good guy thing, in this canon, it was against an evil lab. She just goes out and does whatever she needs to do, such as shooting a gun or cutting her hand to attract the monster with her blood.
And while she has all these guts and intelligence, she is not without warm and grace. After Steve broke Jonathan's camera, Nancy bought a new one for him (her parents can afford it.) She also is there for Mike, her little brother, at the end of S1 and toward the middle of S3. And her affection for Jonathan, such as when he moves and she doesn't want him to go, is sweet. She's a caring girl. She definitely thinks her parents' relationship is bullshit, though. She believes there's a way people expect you to act, and she doesn't want to do that. She carves out her own path, especially when it comes to her work as intern at the newspaper, which draws ridicule from her sexist colleagues. She also shows she isn't putting up with shit when she decides to expose the lab's dark secrets.
She seems to be more insecure in the beginning season, gaining more confidence as years go on. But she is always a little susceptible to lying to herself, which she does quite frequently, with Steve and her future. Barb, her friend who died from the monster in S1, haunts Nancy still. She 'let her die' in her mind. Or sometimes, 'we killed Barb!' Not seeing her home and focusing on her own popularity and fun is a big regret of Nancy's. Nancy also thinks 'We ask for forgiveness, not permission.' is the best policy with a lot of stuff, bolstering her go-getter quality. In this way, I think, rules can be broken, as long as there is a purpose to breaking them.
EDIT / A very important relationship for Nancy is with her little brother Mike. She loves both her siblings, nice with Holly, but Mike gets it (the whole monster every year thing.) They have a bond that way, and always seem to end up coming together with the others to fight against whatever's fighting them that year. She's sometimes out of the loop, not knowing that Mike and El were a thing really, and she does try to talk to him, even suggesting they have a no secrets clause to their relationship. But they're still awkward brother and sister in those areas. They're working on it, though.
Another important relationship is with Steve. Steve was her boyfriend through Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. They were cute, very lovey-dovey and supportive of each other, like when Nancy read his college essay. But, in the end, there was no denying Nancy had a thing for Jonathan, and her guilt over Barb and lack of true love for Steve ripped them apart. They made up in the end of Season 2, Steve saying it's okay and for her to go support Jonathan. He also mentions he's a damn good babysitter, and tends to look after the kids since then. She admires Steve for that, and still wishes him well and has affection for him.
Jonathan and Nancy are a key piece of Stranger Things. They start out with Nancy being the only one who understands about Will, then them unraveling this mystery together and falling in love. They don't get together, however, because Jonathan withdraws, probably out of fear. Nancy, disappointed and wanting to move on, starts dating Steve. But that inevitably falls apart, and she returns to solve a new mystery with Jonathan, ending up with him in the end. He understands the true her really well, and is all about bucking authority when necessary. He's supportive, and unafraid to tell her when he's been wrong, like in Season 3. Nancy's very much in love with him, so much, she doesn't want him to move at the end of Season 3.
Barb should also be talked about more in depth. Despite Nancy telling her just to go home at the party, she really cared for Barb. You can see pictures of them throughout the first season hanging out and laughing. They were best friends. Nancy has a lot of guilt over that night, when Barb got caught by the demogorgon and killed. She was very torn up at the end of Season 1 when El said Barb was gone. She also went and tried to kill the demogorgon in rage. And, in Season 2, her guilt overcomes her and clashes with the 'everything's normal' mood Steve's trying to project. She goes to her funeral in Season 2, seeming to also put her guilt to rest, too.
The 'path' that I referred to in the beginning is just a metaphor for how Nancy develops throughout the show. She carves out her own path, instead of marrying the 'right' guy, getting a house, having kids, and picket fence. She's with Jonathan, and while they may have children, she's not 'settling' like her mom did with her rich dad. She doesn't want an unhappy marriage, like her mother's seems to be at times. She's also going out and getting a job, trying to move forward in the job despite her coworkers' ridicule at her ambition. In these ways, she is carving her own path. /EDIT
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Abilties
Shooting: Nancy is very talented at aiming and using guns.
Reporter: While not technically a reporter, she has a reporter's mind, using her smarts and instincts to figure out what's going on with the rats.
Weaknesses
Lying to herself: For a while, Nancy fell into the same 'trap' as her mother. She would date Steve, have a perfect teenage life, then grow up, get married, and have 2.5 children and a white picket fence. She has a habit of lying to herself, and trying to be someone she doesn't want to be. Though, eventually, she does buck those expectations.
A little too go out and grab it by the horns: It's definitely commendable and important to the plot that Nancy tends to hold the reins, but it can also definitely be dangerous, and sometimes I'm not sure she thinks things through.
